BOB HOPE VETERANS CHAPEL RENOVATION

The Bob Hope Veterans Chapel

Veterans Parkway

The Spanish-Revival building was once an architectural jewel showcasing the skills of master craftsmen.

Designed in 1938 during President Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration, this beautiful Chapel enjoys the prominence of being the spiritual gateway of the Los Angeles National Cemetery.

Unfortunately, the Chapel's elegant features have dulled over the years and it is in need of renovation.

The Veterans Park Conservancy has been working with architects with expertise in historic structures renovation and has located some of the original plans so we can recreate the pews and altar that served mourners and worshippers before the interior was changed into a meeting-room and display of military memorabilia. New construction requires handicapped access and air conditioning.

We are thankful for the generous gift from the Bob and Dolores Hope Foundation which will provide the funding to restore the chapel.

VPC led the effort to dedicate the Chapel in honor of Bob Hope - the legendary entertainer who devoted his life to spending every Christmas with our "troops" in every theater of war. More than any other individual, Bob Hope made our servicemen and women feel like the most important people in the world.

Veterans Park Conservancy wrote to Dolores and Bob Hope, asking their blessings to dedicate the West Los Angeles VAMC Chapel as "The Bob Hope Veterans Chapel". They agreed. Congress made it official by passing a resolution, Public Law 107-183, naming the Chapel.

The Chapel was formally dedicated to Mr. Hope on his 99th Birthday - May 29th, 2002. Over two hundred dignitaries, entertainers, friends and family joined together to pay tribute to America's "Honorary Veteran." Friends shared stories about Bob's military career, his courage, and his endless antics.

Seven World War II-vintage Condor planes flew over in his honor. As the Los Angeles Times put it…the day "provoked the same sort of laughter-and-tears response that was the hallmark of a Hope show."

Once the restoration is complete, the Bob Hope Veterans Chapel will again be a place of solace and spiritual reflection in honor of our American Veterans.
