Hollywood Canteen healing center

The Healing Center pays tribute to the famed Hollywood Canteen founded by Jules Stein, Betty Davis and John Garfield soon after the start of WWII. Hundreds of entertainers came by to say hello and entertain our servicemen and women serving in the pacific. It opened its doors to hundreds of thousands of soldiers, sailors and marines serving in the pacific. The Big Bands played and vocalists didn’t need space age electronics to fill the halls with emotion. Comics rolled them in the aisles. Dancers shook them up.

Legends like Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Ronald Regan, Bing Crosby, and Lucille Ball made everyone in uniform feel like the most important people in the whole world – the way we want to make our Veterans feel today.

Veterans Park Conservancy is assisting the VA’s efforts to provide a center of excellence for medical treatment for injured veterans returning with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and similar injuries affecting our veterans’ quality of life.

“Our veterans have told us in focus groups that they want more complementary therapies.” — Sandra Robertson, RN Director, Patient Center Care, VA Greater LA Healthcare System.

“The building adjacent to the garden (and Hollywood Canteen healing center) will house alternative therapies important to the recuperative process. This is a spectacular way to welcome our veterans back as well as take care of our existing veterans.” — Dr. Dean Norman, Chief of Staff, West Los Angeles VA Healthcare System.
